SCAYD FAMILY ADVOCACY SERVICES

SCAYD has provided a variety of Family Advocate services in the Cotati/Rohnert Park area for years. SCAYD's clients are usually in need of multiple family support services from basic needs like food and shelter to family counseling and abuse prevention. SCAYD convenes a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) which includes the participation of two Title One Elementary School Principals responsible with referring youth and families who may be served by our advocates and other SCAYD team members. Together, the SCAYD team develops a coordinated Case Plan for the family. The team is comprised of representatives from Child Protective Services, the Sonoma County Health and Mental Health Departments, as well as the SCAYD Family Advocates. Although the majority of referrals come from these two schools the advocate program is diverse and provides care for families from anywhere in the Rohnert Park/Cotati area.

The primary focus of the Family Advocate Program is to engage and strengthen the internal resources of each participating family through culturally appropriate services. Many of these families are not the stereotypical family, instead having alternative configurations such as single parent families, grandparents as parents, families where the parents speak different language than English and depend upon their children for translation needs. SCAYD's Family Advocates are Bilingual/Bicultural and services are provided at no cost to the family, so that language or cultural barriers can be worked through and the family can begin to receive the beneficial services they require. Many families with language barriers are unable to understand the county forms to access the services they need and often go without. This program provides the bridge they need to access these services and a supportive person to guide and navigate the system with them. By finding solutions with a family our Family Advocates and their services are able to help keep children safer and families stronger. And of course, by doing so SCAYD is also strengthening the community's fabric and health as a whole.
