SCAYD's YOUTH DIVERSION COUNSELING PROGRAMS

The Cotati/Rohnert Park Juvenile Diversion Program began in 1989 as community leaders sought to reduce the drug and alcohol problems within their community at large. We currently operate two programs in conjunction with the Sonoma County Probation Juvenile Justice Department: 1) The KIDS Project; and 2) Girls' Circles Across Sonoma.

THE KIDS PROJECT -

This program is designed in response to youth who are found using alcohol and/or illegal substances by authorities either at school or in the community. The diversion program serves youth ages 12 - 18 years old for their first infraction of being under the influence or in possession of a controlled substance. This program also serves youth who have had a first time offense of theft or minor violence. Since its conception the diversion program has made many changes to meet the needs of the youth and families in Cotati and Rohnert Park.

SCAYD's most current Diversion Program is called "Families In Action".

Families In Action provides a family intake assessment interview for all youth and their parents, resulting in a case management plan and completion of the Program Entry and Service Plan. At this time an AOD screening tool will be used to determine the severity of the substance abuse and need for referral.

Over a period of six weeks, the program provides six, two and one-half hour educational support groups for both the youth and parents. These six groups are dedicated to the provision and fidelity of the Families In Action curriculum, including: pre-Assessment, presentation of the course material, and post-assessment. Finally, there is a final case management meeting for determination and desire for other family support services. An Exit Interview is then conducted and documented.

Determination of additional services, such as mental health, AOD treatment, or on-going support for the youth or their parent(s) is decided on a case-by-case need at the beginning of the program. Additional support services may also be offered through SCAYD, such as Family Counseling, School-Based Counseling, Family Advocacy Services, Youth Employment Services as well as Homeless Prevention Services.

GIRLS' CIRCLES ACROSS SONOMA -

SCAYD is partnering with the Sonoma County Juvenile Probation Department and other agencies in the county to provide empowerment groups for adolescent girls who have been referred by the Juvenile Probation Department.  Now in its third year here in Sonoma County, trained agency and county staff facilitators are providing this program that is being utilized across the nation with great success.  The program was created locally by Cotati resident Giovanna Taormina and her collaborator from Marin County, Beth Hosfeld.
