SCAYD COUNSELING SERVICES
Sonoma County Adult and Youth Development (SCAYD) offers a variety of counseling services: School-Based, School-Linked, and Community-Based counseling.
School-Based Counseling is a joint partnership with the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District in which SCAYD subcontracts to provide on-campus counseling services with children and youth from Kindergarten through the 12th grade. Under the coordination, training and clinical supervision of our licesned staff therapists, all of the staff counselors are post M.A. degree interns working towards licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists.

School-Based Counselors receive referrals from many sources, however mostly from the school which the child attends. Youth can self-refer, and of course parents, teachers and private therapists also refer them to SCAYD for counseling. If a referral is made by a source other than the parents, the parents are contacted by SCAYD staff in order to obtain parental permission for SCAYD counselors to see their child in either group or individual counseling.
Youth can be referred for a variety of reasons, such as behavior difficulties in school and/or at home, self-esteem issues, family conflicts, as well as substance abuse problems. Counseling sessions generally last for a period of 50 minutes or less, depending upon the age of the child. Counseled youth are given an opportunity to discuss problems in a safe environment and to learn new skills and strategies to solve problems on their own. This service is funded by grants obtained by SCAYD in addition to the support of the school district wo that it is free of charge to youth and their families.
SCAYD's School-Linked Counseling also includes Family Advocacy Services, Juvenile Diversion and other Prevention Programs designed to educate and encourage healthy behavior and lifestyles. One of the School-Linked and Community-Based Counseling Services includes Family Counseling at SCAYD with an experienced family counselor.
Referrals for Family Counseling come from the School-Based program or through people in the community calling the agency for support. Family Counseling often includes support and coaching for parents managing youth with behavioral issues, often focused upon communication and conflict resolution skills.
Family Counseling is available to anyone who lives within the Cotati-Rohnert Park area. There is a sliding scale for Family Counseling in order to maintain affordability for the program.
